"The 2022 John von Neumann Prize – the highest honor and flagship lecture of Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) – is awarded to Leah Edelstein-Keshet, University of British Columbia, in recognition of her far-reaching contributions to mathematical biology. Her work on cellular biophysics as well as collective behavior of organisms has had enormous impact in deciphering biological processes. In addition, her book Mathematical Models in Biology is a classic that has been used by students worldwide and laid the foundation for interdisciplinary research in mathematics and life sciences that is flourishing today. Her recent research centers on modeling single and collective cell migration. "

Leah will be delivering her prize lecture, and possibly receiving a suitcase filled with cash, at the SIAM annual meeting in July 2022. Of course, what SIAM doesn’t mention is that Leah is an example to everyone in the department not just as a researcher, but as a mentor, instructor, course designer, associate head, advisor on all kinds of important university committees, and friend.
