Major/Honours Applications
The Mathematics Department offers a large selection of courses in many areas of pure and applied mathematics which require various levels of mathematical sophistication.
If you have just completed your first year in UBC Science, or if you are transferring to the Faculty of Science from another UBC Faculty, do not use the forms below. You must apply using the centralized process administered by the Faculty of Science.
If you are in the Faculty of Science and have already declared a specialization, or if you are in the Faculty of Arts, you must submit an application directly to the department using the appropriate form below. All applications will be considered in May. The application forms below are open between May 1 and May 20. Full details of admission requirements can be found in the UBC Calendar.
The Department offers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) majors and honours programs in Mathematics and in Mathematics combined with another subject, such as Economics, English, Linguistics, Music, or Philosophy.
Admission Requirements:
Students applying for admission need to complete at least 27 credits by the time of application and also meet the following requirements:
- 6 credits of first-year calculus equivalent to MATH 100 and 101;
- 3 credits that satisfy the Writing Component of the Research and Writing Requirement;
- One of MATH 200, 217, or 226;
- One of MATH 221 or 223;
- MATH 220 (students who complete MATH 226 are exempt from MATH 220);
- 3 credits of the Computing Requirement chosen from CPSC 110 or CPSC 103+107, or MATH 210. Note that students who have only completed CPSC 103 will be considered.
Note that students wishing to apply for programs that combine Mathematics and Economics need to apply through the Vancouver School of Economics.
Selection is based on the entire transcript, with a focus on the courses listed above.
The Department offers Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) majors and honours programs in Mathematics and in Mathematics combined with another subject, such as Economics, Physics, or Computer Science.
Admission Requirements:
Students applying for admission by transfer from year 2 of the B.Sc. need to meet the following requirements:
- 6 credits of first-year calculus equivalent to MATH 100 and 101;
- 6 credits that satisfy the B.Sc. Communication Requirement;
- One of MATH 200, 217, or 226;
- One of MATH 221 or 223;
- MATH 220 (students who complete MATH 226 are exempt from MATH 220);
- 3 credits of the Computing Requirement chosen from CPSC 110 or CPSC 103+107, or MATH 210. Note that students who have only completed CPSC 103 will be considered.
Students currently in year 2 or beyond wishing to transfer to a B.Sc. majors or honours program in Mathematics or in Mathematics combined with another subject need to apply for admission. Applications from students who have transferred to UBC after year 2 may be considered after their first term at UBC.
Note that students wishing to apply for programs that combine Mathematics and another subject will also need to apply for the other subject, separately, through the appropriate department.
Selection is based on the entire transcript, with a focus on the courses listed above.
